    Setup VNC in Ubuntu

    vnc iconYou have a server, but want to setup VNC to access the GUI? We use this tutorial for our systems and wanted to share. (ALT is an IT consulting company, offering technical support for Mac, PC and Linux systems). We try to keep things updated, but tutorials have a tendency of exiring, so some steps may be different for newer versions. We've used Ubuntu 16.04 to install, but it should work with others as well.

    Install the components

    apt-get -y install ubuntu-desktop tightvncserver xfce4 xfce4-goodies autocutsel

    Add the vnc user and give it a password:

    adduser vnc
    passwd vnc

    You can add vnc as sudo, so you could run apps as root. Edit the sudoers file:

    echo "vnc ALL=(ALL)       ALL" >> /etc/sudoers

    Add a software RAID to Linux

    linux-icon-19 We have added this tutorial, because we use it very often ourselves. (ALT is an IT consulting company, providing support for Apple, Windows and Linux based systems and servers.) It describes steps for adding extra disks to an already existing system, not converting current ones to RAID (the disks will be wiped, so don't do it on the OS partition!) We are adding a RAID1 software RAID to most common Linux distributions (the setps should work on any one of them).

    Check if your email was hacked

    It was reported in the news recently that a large collection of email addresses and passwords used to hijack accounts on other services was discovered being distributed on a popular hacking forum. The data contained almost 2.7 billion records including 773 million unique email addresses alongside with passwords for these emails, used for other services. icon security thumbThis is not new and we, as an IT service company, are constantly receiving questions of whether or not an email account has been stolen (largely as a result of email spoofing).

    If you are concerned about your email account, here's a good tool to check if it was hacked and, if it was, where did the hack occur. The information is not exhaustive, but it gives an idea:

    It is important to remember that passwords should be changed regularly and not duplicated on other services. The best option is to use a password generating tool, to avoid password replication.

    Exchange Autodiscover keeps reverting back

    exchange-2013Q: We have switching our Exchange server to another one, but the autodiscover keeps reverting back to the old server. Is there a way to fix this?

    A: You can manually bypass the Microsoft Exchange settings. (Below was tested on Exchange 2010 and 2013.)
